The circular economy, driven by the European Union (EU) since 2015, has redefined the management of products and waste, leaving behind the linear approach where products are discarded after their useful life. EU legislation, with an emphasis on Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), has been pivotal in this transition. EPR extends the producer's responsibility to the end of the product's life cycle, encouraging reuse, recycling, and reducing environmental impact. Portugal has joined this effort and adapted its legal framework, incorporating EPR into the General Waste Management Regime and aligning it with EU guidelines. In this context, the main objective of this research is to analyze the configuration of EPR in Portuguese legislation, especially after the latest EU legislative changes. The research is divided into several sections, starting with an analysis of the legal framework of EPR in the EU and then exploring its implementation in Portugal, with a focus on integrated management systems. It concludes with reflections and recommendations to move towards more sustainable and efficient waste management in Portugal.
