This article first analyzes the intense process of rural depopulation that Spain has undergone since the mid-20th century. Since the eighties of the last century, academic interest in the subject has arisen, but it was not until the second decade of the twenty- first century that it burst into the social debate and the public agenda in a significant way.
The different administrations have reacted very recently by deploying policies against depopulation, which we analyze both in terms of their objectives and the instruments they propose. Finally, we will consider some implications that can be highlighted for the development of public policies in the light of the theory.
