Paolo Sacchi
The author describes how all the political and religious tensions accumulated in five centuries of history converge in Judea in the times of Jesus. Opposing Judean theologies are represented by the Pharisees. These trends, however, agree (1) on the belief that sin keeps away from salvation not only in this world but also in the other, and (2) on the coming of the Messiah. In this context, Jesus’ ultimate objective was to overcome the problem of sin. The author illustrates, with Jesus’ teaching in relation to repudiation and to purity and impurity, how Jesus frequently accepts the ideas from one side against the other, modifies or innovates them, always taking into account the problems of his time and his society.
