Conveying the scope and power of the scientific method in an engaging and accessible way is a major challenge in science education. I show how the well-known (and irksome) phenomenon of the knotting of flex, cord and similarly "stringy" objects provides an unusual opportunity for students to gain experience with cutting-edge mathematics, experimental design and data analysis. I describe a nationwide schools project to investigate the phenomenon which led to confirmation of the so-called Loop Conjecture, and give suggestions for further investigations.
