This article explores the place reserved for individuality, a motif so markedly present in Schleiermacher’s early works, in the completed system, and especially in the Ethics. Firstly we bring to the fore the role of the interpretation of the writings of Spinoza, as the fundamental philosophical inspiration for Schleiermacher’s project, including his Ethics. But the adoption of a systematic framework after 1803, in particular in the 1811 Dialectic, threatens to undermine the important role assigned to individuality. It is in Schleiermacher’s original conception of time that we find the key to the articulation between the systematic logic of functional differentiation and the ethical logic of individualization.
