This Educational Technology Classic includes the major portion of an article by Charles A. Wedemeyer, who was the William H. Lighty Professor of Education at the University of Wisconsin. The original article appeared in the January, 1972 edition of this magazine, which was a special issue dealing with Informal (Open) Education, Student Freedom, and Educational Technology, edited by Lawrence Lipsitz. This continues the magazine's current series of selected articles published in the early years of its 49-year run.
