Se aborda la intersección entre “lo monstruoso” y la identidad en la literatura, empleando un enfoque comparativo entre dos novelas contemporáneas: El animal sobre la piedra (2008) de Daniela Tarazona y La vegetariana (2007) de Han Kang. Las obras desafían la corporalidad normativa mediante fusiones físicas y metafóricas que permiten a los personajes resistir los espectros tradicionales de la maternidad, la socialización y las relaciones íntimas. Lo monstruoso, marcado por la hibridez y la impureza, revela un sistema en crisis; las protagonistas encarnan la posibilidad de reconfigurarse en términos de su conexión con los universos simbólicos animal y vegetal, respectivamente. Se argumenta que la imagen del monstruo, más allá de su representación aterradora o fascinante, puede ser una poderosa herramienta para abrir las puertas a la diferencia, desafiar las normas existentes, y representar universos narrativos en los que se configuran nuevas convenciones sociales.
This study addresses the intersection of "the monstrous" and identity in literature through a comparative approach between two contemporary novels: El animal sobre la piedra (2008) by Daniela Tarazona and The Vegetarian (2007) by Han Kang. Both works challenge normative corporeality through physical and metaphorical hybrids that allow the characters to resist traditional specters of motherhood, socialization, and intimate relationships. The monstrous, marked by hybridity and impurity, reveals a system in crisis; the protagonists embody the possibility of reconfiguring themselves regarding their connection to the animal and vegetal symbolic realms, respectively. It is argued that the image of the monster, beyond its terrifying or fascinating representation, can be a powerful tool to open doors to difference, challenging the existing norms, and representing narrative worlds in which new social conventions are formed.
