Based on a qualitative study of teachers who have introduced yoga into their physical education classes, this article analyses its transposition within the school setting. It identifies two ideal-types of appropriation. The first, centred on the “sensitive body”, emphasises the construction of an intelligibility of the lived body which articulates the perception of sensations, the identification of affective states and the regulation of emotions; the second, centred on the “performing body”, situates yoga within a logic of technical mastery, physical conditioning and the assessment of learning outcomes. The article shows that these differentiated appropriations are rooted, in particular, in distinct bodily and professional socialisation processes.
