The present study aimed to conduct a bibliometric analysis and literature review on Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a tool for academic innovation in higher education. The methodology employed was a bibliometric analysis; for the study, 184 Scopus documents that met the inclusion criteria for relevance and English keywords (artificial intelligence, academic innovation, and university education) were considered, in addition to a systematic literature review strategy that included ten documents. Indicators such as the number of publications, countries, international sources, and authors were analyzed. The results reveal a notable increase in the number of studies on AI applied to higher education between 2021 and 2024, with 161 (87,5%) academic papers. The United States was the most prominent country, accounting for 11,7% of the output. Additionally, the International Journal of Management Education was the most important source, with 365 citations. Among the most cited authors are Michel-Villarreal, Salinas-Navarro and Vilalta-Perdomo (123 citations each). Most publications (79%) were scientific articles, with 31% focused on the social sciences and 17% on computer science. It is concluded that there is outstanding international collaboration among authors and countries, drawing on relevant sources and addressing thematic approaches of great interest, which can enhance the diversity of studies and global solutions in higher education. Finally, the literature analysis allows researchers to identify areas of greatest interest, helping to focus future studies on various key areas
