This article highlights the care work carried out by indigenous women during the forced displacement in transit experienced by their families, from 1997 —when they fled due to violence in their communities from Chenalhó, Chiapas— to their settlement in 2014 in the village of Paraíso Tsotsil, in Ocosingo. The qualitative and ethnographic methodolog y was based on interviews and life stories of five women and one man along with a participant observation conducted in 2024. The Tsotsil families went over three different stages in their displacement, including mountains, refugee camps, and collective land, before finally settling on land acquired by themselves. While men led decisions concerning the movement of the families, women sustained life by performing care work under precarious conditions, emphasizing access to water, food, and family health. We conclude that this little-recognized feminine work, together with well-organized networks between families, and humanitarian aid, allowed them to sustain their lives.
