This article examines the case of the Pisco Designation of Origin (DO) in Peru, within the context of its long-standing dispute with Chile over the ownership of the spirit. Through interviews and documentary analysis, it explores how the DO is interpreted differently depending on the geographic scale. At the national level, the DO functions as a symbolic tool for asserting national identity, aiming to present Pisco as an exclusive emblem of Peruvian heritage. In contrast, in the Ica region —historically linked to its production—the DO is understood as a means to preserve traditional knowledge, inherited techniques, and cultural value. The study thus reveals the multi-scalar nature of DOs, which can carry multiple, overlapping, and sometimes conflicting meanings depending on the scale at which they are constructed and mobilized.
