The article examines the use of The Federalist in the Argentine constituent debates of 1949. It shows how, despite the Peronist Party’s criticism of the liberalism of the 1853 Constitution, U.S. constitutional doctrine –closely tied to that tradition– played a central role in its arguments. Peronism strategically invoked The Federalist and the U.S. model to defend three key aspects of its reformist project: indefinite presidential reelection, the legitimacy of the constituent process, and the revolutionary character of the reform. In conclusion, the article suggests rereading the 1949 reform as a privileged reenactment of the foundational debate in Argentine constitutionalism: the dispute over the originality or authenticity of the 1853 Constitution
