The extensive work of the Scottish philosopher and sociologist Alasdair MacIntyre (1929-2025) has been –and continues to be– the subject of numerous studies, especially in areas of research where his influence has been particularly significant, such as moral and political philosophy. It is precisely in these fields that MacIntyre's invocation of the concept of “tradition” stands out. However, the Scottish philosopher's exploration of the meaning given to this concept in the equally extensive work of the Irish philosopher and politician Edmund Burke (1729-1797) is less well known, and even less familiar are the reasons that led him to adopt a critical perspective in that inquiry. In this context, the research I propose is to investigate the reasons that lead MacIntyre to distance himself from the notion of tradition, when it appears mentioned in Burke’s work, not without first having analyzed the very idea of tradition that underlies the philosophical works of both authors, between which there are two centuries of distance.
