The purpose of these pages is to reconstruct –following the guidelines of Walter Savage Landor– a conversation that took place in late 1793, the year of the Reign of Terror, between the philosopher-historian Edward Gibbon, the statesman and orator Edmund Burke, and Monsignor Charles Erskine, the Pope’s Nuncio in England. The background to this conversation remains of interest when reflecting on the political form appropriate to the present: between The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire and Reflections on the Revolution in France–the best-known works of Gibbon and Burke–a paradigmatic relationship may be discerned, in which the Catholic Church would constitute a third pillar. Gibbon and Burke were part of the long controversy over the elective affinities between the Revolution (understood as a violation of the European res publica) and the Empire.
