This essay seeks to reclaim the genuinely literary, not bookish, character of William Hazlitt and Edmund Burke, against the non-historicist background of Shakespeare’s traditional grounding. The idea of tradition, however, would eventually take on a constitutional form by virtue of the English Revolution. Burke and Hazlitt, antagonists only in ideological terms, are authors who would have contributed to the cause of liberty from the perspective of poetical justice.
