Purpose: Collaborative economy applications such as Airbnb are booming worldwide, being used by a wide social base. Despite this, there is still little literature that allows us to identify why these new applications are used and how they are adopted by users. Therefore, the purpose of this article is precisely to identify what factors affect the adoption and use of the Airbnb application. Design: For the design of this research, a unified model of the theory of acceptance and use of consumer-oriented technology (UTAUT2) extended with the variables intention of use and EWOM was taken as a starting point. Methodology: Data were collected from 404 people in Spain using an online form to fill in the questionnaire. The results were analyzed using the PLS-SEM estimation method. Contributions: The results have shown us that the most relevant background for the intention of use is the habit and the expectation of result in that order, being not significant the rest of the variables of the UTAUT2. Likewise, the eWom has been significant as a background, thus evolving the UTAUT2 with this new variable towards a new model of adoption and use. Originality of the research: To date there is little literature on adoption of collaborative economy apps in which we have found that the current models of adoption and use of technology need a renewal. We contributed to the literature on adoption and use of new technologies by demonstrating that there are variables that are no longer significant and new variables with more explanatory capacity appear.
