Pensar en el presente y futuro de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México implica reflexionar sobre su pasado y los fundamentos ideológicos en los que se originó. Así lo propone este texto, el cual busca concatenar el trabajo analítico de Ambrosio Velasco en torno a las ideas y el trabajo fundacional de Justo Sierra y de José Vasconcelos con el propio acto de enunciar estas ideas en la actualidad. El comentario profundiza en el contexto histórico y cultural que dio origen al lema de la Universidad en 1921, “Por mi raza hablará el espíritu”, así como en su análisis filológico a partir del positivismo y del espiritualismo, corrientes que nutrieron este lema para cimentar la noción de “espíritu” como rectora de la unidad humanística y educadora a la que aspiró la Universidad desde sus primeros años de vida.
The examination of the present and the future of the National Autonomous University of Mexico implies reflecting on its past and the ideological foundations in which it was originated. This is what this text proposes by connecting the analytical work of Ambrosio Velasco about the ideas and the foundational work of Justo Sierra and José Vasconcelos with the act of enunciating these ideas nowadays. This comment deepens in the historical and cultural context that gave birth to the University’s motto in 1921—“Through my race, shall the spirit speak”—and in its philological analysis from the standpoint of Positivism and Spiritualism—currents that in turn nurtured the motto and established the notion of “Spirit” as the motif of the humanistic and educational unity to which the University aspired to from its earliest years.
