The current Tanzanian education language policy allows parents to enrol their children in English or Swahili medium primary schools. Swahili medium primary schools are fee-free, and the public owns them, whereas most English medium primary schools are privately owned. This study explores factors for Swahili medium primary school teachers who are well versed in pedagogy choosing to enrol their children in English medium primary schools to learn through English, instead of Swahili medium schools where their children would learn in a familiar language. The study used a qualitative research approach with a hermeneutic phenomenology research design to examine the problem. Purposive random sampling was used to obtain a sample of 20 Swahili medium primary school teachers who were interviewed using semi-structured interviews. The findings reveal that the English medium of instruction, better school environment, competent teachers, transport and meal services provision and higher employment prospects influence Swahili medium primary school teachers to enrol their children in English medium primary schools.
