Suiza es un socio clave de la UE a todos los niveles, pero señaladamente en el comercial. Tras el rechazo por su población en referéndum en 1992 a incorporarse al Espacio Económico Europeo, el Gobierno suizo propició la negociación de sendos paquetes de acuerdos con la UE (Bilaterales I y Bilaterales II) entre 1999 y 2004 que han venido rigiendo sus relaciones con la UE desde entonces. No obstante, dada la voluntad de la UE de clarificar y simplificar este marco así como de dotarle de un mecanismo de asunción dinámica de la normativa de la UE, en 2014 se lanzó la negociación de un nuevo marco para las relaciones bilaterales, cuya negociación ha estado llena de vicisitudes y ha culminado al fin en diciembre de 2024 con un acuerdo de principios en torno a un paquete de «Bilaterales III» que será pulido a lo largo de 2025 para su firma, previsiblemente en el primer trimestre de 2026, y su posterior aprobación por la población suiza en referéndum
Switzerland is a key partner of the EU at all levels, but especially in trade. After its population rejected joining the European Economic Area in a 1992 referendum, the Swiss government negotiated packages of agreements with the EU (Bilateral I and Bilateral II) between 1999 and 2004, which have governed their relations with the EU since then. However, given the EU’s desire to clarify and simplify this framework and to provide it with a mechanism for the dynamic adoption of EU regulations, negotiations for a new framework for bilateral relations were launched in 2014. These negotiations have been full of vicissitudes and finally culminated in December 2024 with an agreement in principle on a package of «Bilateral III» agreements, which will be refined throughout 2025 for signature, likely in the first quarter of 2026, and subsequent approval by the Swiss population in a referendum
