This article is an exploratory analysis of the case of the journals included in SciELO Colombia. Its main objective is to describe the performance of the number of references per article to identify trends and patterns between 2004 and 2019. Methodologically, it uses the bibliometric perspective, a mainly quantitative approach, to analyze a total of 61,350 articles published by 224 journals, which accumulate 1,983,030 bibliographic references. In this study, the journals were associated with the six Major areas of knowledge of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the articles were grouped according to the total number of references: 0-19, 20-39, 40-59, 60-79 and >80. One of the main results is related to the systematic reduction of the proportion of articles with the lowest number of references (0-19), mainly in areas such as Humanities and Engineering and Technology, while that of articles with between 20 and 59 bibliographic references in the six areas increases.
