In recent years, in relation to climate change and the increase in the demand for coastal tourist areas with conditions other than the traditional sun and beach, the management of the Cantabrian coast has become particularly important. This article includes the Special Territorial Plan for the Asturian Coast (POLA), which was definitively approved in 2005; it focuses on the search for a balance between the preservation and enhancement of environmental values. This takes into account the existing settlement, as well as the limitations to its exploitation, particularly touristic. It contains a rigorous analysis and innovative and coherent proposals with a comprehensive vision. The quality of the Plan was recognised by winning the sixth edition of the European Awards for Territorial and Urban Planning organised by the European Council of Urban Planners.
