The so-called Fourth Industrial Revolution is accompanied by a profound change in the labor market. The new technologies bring with them new ways of providing services and new professional activities, but they will also lead to the disappearance of many jobs. All this, added to demographic problems, and changes linked to the climate crisis, will mean an enormous challenge for our Social State and, without a doubt, a new and different effort from the existing reality when its original structure was configured. The Social Security System, as the main instrument of social protection and the main guarantor of our Social State, will have to adapt both its structure and financing, if it wants to fulfill its purposes. In this context, the Universal Basic Income is emerging as an interesting proposal that will be analyzed in this paper.
