  This article aims to analyze the perception of and the debate surrounding European integration in Portugal, before and after theapproval of the Maastricht Treaty, taking into account the country’s identity andpolitical culture. In particular, the article will assess the attitudes of the Portuguesegovernment, political parties and the general public towards the Maastricht Treaty.
