Populismo es una palabra ambigua y confusa, que genera un ardoroso debate como concepto, pero, también como término. En este artículo nuestra pretensión es la de profundizar en el status controvertido del populismo como elemento integrante del vocabulario de las ciencias sociales. En primer lugar, profundizaremos en las problemáticas y ambigüedades que surgen de su uso común, de su uso banal, de su uso en la pugna política y partidista diaria. En segundo lugar, indagaremos en los obstáculos que se nos plantean en su uso especializado o académico. Por un lado, debido a la fragmentación y escasa acumulabilidad de las teorías existentes. Y, por otro lado, debido a la extendida práctica de creación de neologismos y el empleo de sinónimos que encajen con el significado que se otorga al fenómeno populista. Este repaso por lo problemático del populismo nos situará inmediatamente en el debate sobre su validez y utilidad como categoría analítica de las ciencias sociales. Una discusión que nos situará ante la disyuntiva de desterrar el término del vocabulario científico o proseguir en la tarea de encontrar algún tipo de definición. En definitiva, en la compresión del complejo e intricado fenómeno populista.
Populism is an ambiguous and confusing word that generates a heated debate as a concept, but also as a term. In this article our aim is to delve into the controversial status of populism as an integral element of the vocabulary of the social sciences. In the first place, we will delve into the problems and ambiguities that arise from its common use, from its banal use, from its use in the daily political and partisan struggle. Secondly, we will investigate the obstacles that we face in its specialized or academic use. On the one hand, due to the fragmentation and poor accumulability of existing theories. And, on the other hand, due to the widespread practice of creating neologisms and the use of synonyms that try to fit the meaning given to the populist phenomenon. This review of what is problematic about populism will immediately place us in the debate about its validity and usefulness as an analytical category in the social sciences. A discussion that will place us before the dilemma of banishing the term from the scientific vocabulary or continuing with the task of finding some kind of definition.
