The oral tradition gathers the cultural manifestations that have been transmitted from generation to generation throughout the time by means of any type of oral expression (legends, stories, true stories, songs, poems, prayers or games, among others). In the first place, in this work it succinctly collects the history of folklore in the Extremadura region.
Afterwards, focusing on a specific case, the story of the collection “El Pico de la Cigüeña” is told, which reissues in 12 volumes the most beautiful tales of the oral tradition in Extremadura. This project arose within the Children’s and Young People’s Literature research group at the University of Extremadura (2013). The idea arose from the realization that Extremadura has an exceptional wealth of folk tales from the oral tradition. Many of these stories have been collected in collections over the last 135 years, but despite this great compilation work, we no longer find them in villages, they are no longer told to children.
In fact, many of these stories are hardly known anymore. That is why the group decided to get down to work to bring the children back to some of the most beautiful stories of the region and created the collection. We have worked with 9 different illustrators, all from Extremadura, who have been able to give a visual form to the essence of the stories. Stories have been selected that could continue to attract the attention of young readers today.
