This article seeks to understand the reconversion of the sugar agroindustry in Cuba through the lived and narrated experiences of the workers. The methodological approach uses case studies that allow an understanding of the dynamics that occur in the contexts impacted by the reconversion. It privileges narrative interviews that allow subjective experiences to be communicated and the contexts in which they are construed. The narratives denote the demise of a lineage of industrial heritage, one related to the pride of being a sugar worker in an agroindustry linked to Cuba as a nation and to a productive identity constructed historically with certain privileges. Discourse shows attempts to resist the vulnerability that reconversion of the sugar agribusiness created in everyday life, revealing a vision linked to a model of welfare and to the paternalistic state, where everything was decided from above, undermining local agency.
