Este artculo explora e identifica patrones de largo plazo de cambio poltico en AmricaLatina. El anlisis de series de tiempo revel la aparente existencia de un "efecto domin"mediante el cual, la democratizacin en el Pas X incrementara la probabilidad de uncambio similar en los pases vecinos Y y Z. El estudio tambin encontr apoyo considerablepara la idea que seala que la experiencia previa con la democracia incrementara laprobabilidad de experiencias posteriores con la democracia, y que una nica experienciaprevia establecera las bases suficientes para la restauracin de la democracia. Dichos hallazgossealan un punto crucial: los factores que promueven la democratizacin en Am-rica Latina suelen ser internos a la regin, ms que externos.
This article explores and identifies long-term patterns of political change in Latin America.Time-series analysis revealed the apparent existence of a "domino effect" throughwhich democratization in Country X would increase the likelihood of similar change inneighboring countries Y and Z. The study also found considerable support for the idea thatprior experience with democracy would increase the probability of subsequent experiencewith democracy and that a single prior experience would establish a sufficient basis for democratic restoration. Such findings make a crucial point: Factors promoting democratizationin Latin America tended to be internal to the region, rather than external.
