Student engagement with school is an educational topic of current interest. However, research on this object focuses on validating quantitative instruments that account for engagement, leaving aside the experiences lived by students in a given context. This study analyzed the school engagement of students from Cecyte, Baja California, in the context of the online learning derived from the health contingency. From a qualitative approach, we carried out a questionnaire, focus groups, and interviews with high school students. The results support the multidimensional construct of school engagement described in the literature. On one hand, students make an effort and comply with the teachers' instructions; however, the difficulty to attend and participate during online learning sessions reduces behavioral engagement. On the other hand, the students developed learning strategies that allowed them to understand concepts in greater depth, thereby strengthening cognitive engagement. Finally, the current educational context favored the emergence of negative emotions such as stress, frustration, and sadness, which impacted affective engagement.
