A lo largo de 2019 se conmemoró en todo el mundo el quinto centenario de la muerte de Leonardo da Vinci, un genio dotado de un impresionante talento artístico que trascendió el ámbito de la pintura para permear los mundos de la ingeniería, arquitectura, anatomía, paleontología, botánica, etc. En este artículo, sin embargo, se analiza un aspecto clave en la obra del sabio renacentista más paradigmático que ha pasado desapercibido y que caracterizamos como “el sueño de Leonardo”: la construcción de la Mecánica como quinto mathemata; el sueño de la matematización de la ciencia del movimiento.
The fifth centenary of the death of Leonardo da Vinci was commemorated all around the world throughout 2019. Da Vinci, a genius endowed with an impressive artistic talent, transcended the field of painting to permeate engineering, architecture, anatomy, palaeontology, botany, etc. In this article, a key aspect is analysed in the work of this Renaissance scientist that has gone unnoticed and that can be characterized as “Leonardo’s dream”, his lifelong illusion: the construction of mechanics as the fifth mathemata; the dream of the mathematization of the science of movement.
