Self-respect is configured as one of the most valuable moral dimensions for a people’s life. So much so that Rawls in A Theory of Justice considers it the most important primary good of all. The human being who esteems and respects himself is endowing his life with an incalculable moral sense and turns his existence into a full and meritorious project. Self-esteem gives people a sense of their own worth and assures them of the confidence necessary to undertake and develop a meaningful life project. Humiliation and shame threat the foundations of self-respect and harm human dignity.
