The present article conducts a theoretical and empirical analysis of Baumol’s disparity hypothesis. This hypothesis was originally formulated to study the difference in productivity between the services sector and the industrial sector. However, its adaptation to the public sector has been widely studied as said sector is similar to the services sector in that it is characterized by the intensive use of labor. Numerous works have been carried out which have both analyzed the theoretical premises and empirically tested Baumol’s hypothesis. This article conducts various empirical tests for the Spanish case. Its main contribution is the calculation of parameters, which in earlier works were obtained from other sources, and the utilization of unit root tests and cointegration in time series. We conclude that Baumol’s model does not provide a convincing explanation for public spending growth in Spain for the study period.
