The concept of utopia is often opposed to that of political realism. However, at the end of the 20th century and against the anti-utopian tendency prevailing in liberalism, John Rawls defended the role of realistic utopianism in political philosophy. In this article, Rawls’ proposal will be addressed with the help of a reformulation of Lyman Tower Sargent’s typology of utopias and David Estlund’s diagnosis of the attitudes towards utopianism in the Anglo-Saxon political philosophy. In this context, the value of Rawls’ effort to restore the place of utopias in the debates of contemporary political philosophy will be better understood, independently of the limitations of his theoretical utopia.
