The discovery of the periodic table is generally atributed to the Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev, who published it in May 1869. However, before then others had listed the known elements in various ways, even as far as noting that there must be some still to be discovered. Today, there are many versions of the table, but one form predominates, and why this is so is explained.
