Desde 1998, legisladores de diversos partidos políticos presentaron iniciativas en el Congreso de la Unión para que los mexicanos que radican en el extranjero pudieran ejercer su derecho al voto. Fue hasta 2006 cuando se cumplió por primera vez este derecho, para elegir al presidente de la república. Actualmente, el Instituto Nacional Electoral ha realizado numerosas gestiones con el objetivo de llevar a cabo la credencialización de quienes residen en el extranjero y, con ello, no solo garantizar su derecho a votar desde el exterior, sino contar con un padrón y listado nominal actualizado de ellos
Since 1998, legislators from various political parties have presented initiatives in the Congress of the Union to allow Mexicans residing abroad to exercise their right to vote. This right was granted for the first time in the 2006 presidential election. Currently, the National Electoral Institute has carried out numerous efforts in order to facilitate the voter registration of citizens residing abroad, in order to guarantee their right to vote from abroad, and, also, to generate an updated registry and nominal list of voters residing abroad
