In Europe of the beginning of the twentieth century outlines the problem of the individual committed to safeguard his being from the mechanisms of a reality that is increasingly industrialized under the guidance of the bourgeois class emerges. The conditions of society become extremely complex: difficult relationships, fragmentary knowledge, incommunicability. Faced with the impoverishment of values devalued and mercificed, the individual is forced to forsake the all-encompassing look on the whole of historical, social and political phenomena. Against intellectual defeat Michelstaedter, analyzing the tragic impact of power rhetoric on society and the individual, proposes a return to the Greeks, to ancient models assumed as exemplary sources to refute the false ideas dominant in contemporary culture. The outdatness of his thought expresses a decisive moral substance that in the light of socratic persuasion reveals the deception of rhetoric fatal for the dignity of human life.
