La etnicidad ha sido y continúa siendo una dimensión crítica en la política africana, al aportar los ingredientes primarios a la mayoría de los confl ictos del continente. Sin embargo, el problema no es la heterogeneidad étnica per se, sino el manejo político del que es objeto. A propósito de cumplirse 20 años del genocidio en Ruanda, este artículo revisa como el enfrentamiento entre los hutus y los tutsis se remonta al período pre-colonial, pero obedece, sobre todo, a la institucionalización de las diferencias físicas durante la colonia, lo que coloca al imaginario occidental como premisa de la desigualdad
Ethnicity has been and remains a critical dimension in African politics, as the primary ingredient of most of the confl icts on the continent. However, the problem is not ethnic heterogeneity per se, but its political use. On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Rwanda genocide, this article reviews how the confrontation between the Hutus and Tutsis goes back to pre-colonial period, but obeys mostly to the institutionalization of the physical diff erences in the colony, which places the Western imaginary as a premise of inequality
