In the mid-17th century the parish church of San Lorenzo was faced with the challenging task of acquiring a new high altarpiece of a comparable standing to the previous one, dated around 1500. Fortunately, the work passed the test with flying colours thanks to its notable formal innovations and to its carefully chosen, wide-ranging, devotional theme. This research studies the main discourses of the Baroque altarpiece, expressed in the large format paintings by Bartolomé Vicente (ca. 1675) and in particular in the architectural elements that frame and divide the altarpiece and in its sculptures, works carried out by Sebastián de Ruesta and Pascual Ramos in 1647-1650.
