The histories of Rome are tributary of the styles and intentions of the different authors and times in which they were written. The father of the modern Spanish Marcelino Menéndez Pelayo, in his youth travels to Italy, contrasts a classic and imperishable historiography about Rome with a modern historiography to which himself belongs.
