This article is concerned with the effects of agricultural productivity on the environment using the example of deforestation. We examine this relationship with the help of a sample of nine countries in the Congo Basin for the period from 1990 to 2010. Our economic results show that an increase in agricultural productivity reduces the rate of deforestation of the countries considered. An increase in agricultural productivity can therefore be a means of solving the problem of producing a greater quantity of food and the preservation of the forests of the Congo Basin.
