A fines del siglo XIX se producen importantes acontecimientos sociales y educativos en Puno-Perú como el comercio acelerado de lana al mercado europeo que consecuentemente dio lugar al despojo de tierras a las comunidades campesinas por los gamonales aprovechándose del analfabetismo, y en respuesta a estos hechos, en el siglo XX, surgen líderes campesinos denominados mensajeros para exigir al Estado escuela para educarse, y ante la oposición del gamonal fundan escuelas clandestinas. Como consecuencia de estas luchas se establecieron escuelas en el medio rural con la política de incorporar al indio a la "civilización" pero con efectos adversos en el aprendizaje del castellano que dio lugar al surgimiento de maestros indigenistas para proponer una pedagogía contextualizada al tiempo de luchar por la revaloración del indígena, cuyas vidas y aportes se visibilizan en el presente.
