In the "New Science", the "verum factum" principle is presented both as an epistemological and as an ontological principle. Vico sees principles created by the human mind as the tenets of the functional structure regulating the formation and the preservation of social groups. Given the relation of mutual modification existing between truth and fact, politics -defined as an antagonistic process leaing to the setting of social rules- is an activity of the utmost importance. Therefore, the "verum factum" lays at the base of the notion of the political as well as of political science as a field of study.
