This article states that contemporary philosophy has evolved from enthusiasm towards pessimism in terms of foundations and that the feeling of cultural crisis has led to doubt the validity of the Cartesian legacy and its conception of human rationality. The article also deals with the way in which Husserl and Rorty cope with the idea that, according to them, constitutes the greatest intellectual dilemma of our times. Thus, the attention is focused on the relativist challenge in order to understand the alliance between realists and idealists as well as the bipolar structure which has molded and deformed the discussion concerning this topic as well as persuaded us to think that the only alive options are a sort of rationalist fundamentalism and a vitriolic skepticism. Lastly, the discussion is focused on the fact that the Cartesian metaphor of foundation discloses an underlying existential aspect within the dispute, which explains the dramatism shown in moments.
