Durante el último año de su vida lúcida, Nietzsche recrudece su campaña contra la situación cultural en Alemania y Europa, que él considera profundamente decadente. Como quiera que el movimiento wagneriano le parece la expresión más acabada de aquella decadencia, el filósofo concentra sus ataques contra la música y, muy especialmente, contra la filosofía musical de Wagner. También contra los valores nacionalistas y cristianos que esa música trata de trasmitir. Al objeto de hacer su crítica más incisiva e hiriente, Nietzsche recurre al humor mediante una aguda ironía en forma de chistes, juegos de palabras y acuñaciones terminológicas propias que condensan la virulencia del ataque
During the last year of his lucid life Nietzsche heightens his campaign against the cultural situation in Germany and in Europe, which he considers as deeply decadent. As long as the Wagnerian movement seems to him the ultimate expression of that decadence, the philosopher concentrates his attacks against the music and, above all, against the music’s philosophy of Wagner. These attacks are also directed against the nationalist and Christian values this music tries to transmit. In order to make more incisive and wounding his criticism Nietzsche uses humor by means of a sharp irony and displays jokes, puns and coinages of his own. All this enhances the virulence of his attacks
