Una de las grandes trotamundos de esta época, fue Florence Dixie, primera mujer en visitar la Patagonia por motivos recreativos. El objetivo de este artículo es explicar cómo Dixie utilizó este viaje para destacar el potencial de la mujer y argumentar por qué se considera que fue diferente a otras viajeras. El análisis de su testimonio Across Patagonia (1880) refleja que su experiencia fue más que una aventura turística.
In the Victorian era travels became an effective tool in the struggle for women’s emancipation, because they expanded their participation in the public sphere. One of the greatest globetrotters of this time was Florence Dixie, the first woman who visit Patagonia for recreational purposes. The aim of this article is to explain how Dixie used this trip as a way of highlight women’s potential and present arguments regarding why she is consider an unusual Victorian traveler. An analysis of her testimony Across Patagonia (1880) shows that her experience was more than a touristic adventure.
