El artículo presenta el Real Hospicio de León como la institución ilustrada más importante de la provincia, León, pionera en una forma de atención social a la pobreza través de la formación laboral, en la industria textil. Fue precursora de los avances sociales que habrían de asentarse en el siglo XX, tarea en la que fue la el Obispo de la Diócesis Cayetano Cuadrillero Mota, el que ostentó la iniciativa y el protagonismo de la Obra, aunque bajo la alta supervisión y financiación de la Administración civil.
