Students are frequently called upon to write up science information, ideas or investigations in the form of a "news report". However, this is often done in a rather perfunctory manner, with little attention paid to the rich learning opportunities that could flow from such an activity. This article describes a cross-curricular "Media Conference Project" conducted in a school in Northern Ireland. Based on a presentation from a visiting university research scientist, it aimed to develop students' science knowledge, their awareness of science in the news, and their literacy skills in relation to listening, talking, reading and writing
