The Birth of the Teaching Profession. This article analyses the official arrangements and social mechanisms which, in the second half of the 18th century, contributed to a profound change in the image and status of the teacher. In spite of their very strong internali coherence, most of the reforms envisaged after the expulsion of the Jesuits met with total or partial failure, because of the resistance put up both by the old university corporation and the Church. The latter feared a secularization of education which would thereby remove it from Church control. But the religious communities themselves were not immune from the movement running through the century : increasingly strong penetration of academic criteria into the recruitment norms and, after the conflict over Jansenism, increasing laicization of the «priestly» communities formed in the 17th century. The invention of the Imperial University represents not so much an ex nihilo creation as the combining into a structured whole of the separate changes which had previously taken place.
