The article looks at economic and labor market problems and policies designed to address them in the U.S., as of 2014. It discusses the role of the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) in addressing what the author describes as the most significant economic challenges the country faces: the need for faster economic growth to create more jobs overall; long-term unemployment among experienced workers; labor market inequality; and the need of dislocated and disadvantaged workers for training and job-search help. Topics include unemployment insurance (UI), the DOL's Employment and Training Administration, and effective program evaluation in the DOL.
