The article discusses U.S. efforts to develop long-range hypersonic conventional weapons, with a particular focus on boost-glide missiles. It is suggested that although the U.S. Department of Defense's Prompt Global Strike initiative was conceived as a non-nuclear defense option, the use of such weapons could provoke enemy states into using nuclear weapons against the U.S. The author provides information on various critiques of the boost-glide missile project, including its lack of a clear mission and its potential to escalate arms races and other conflicts with China. The missiles' potential use against Chinese counter-intervention weapons is also discussed.
