Social protest generally understood as the collective action that citizens from different social groups employ in demanding their rights. The media play a key role in diffusing its exposure through the way they (re)present this. In this work we are presenting the results of the way in which diverse groups in the City of Rio Cuarto (Argentina) perceive and evaluate the various forms of social protest shown by the local news ("Telediario"). We have placed particular emphasis on the definitions which arise from the discourses of those interviewed according to their conceptions of social protest, on the role that they assign to the news (be it considered a service to the community, an intermediary between conflicting parties, or a for-profit company); and, finally, on the way in which the televised protest is interpreted, taking into account the impact of the form in which the news is presented (as spectacular, as a dramatization, and/or fragmented, among other means).
